China has started imposing an additional 55% tariff on Brazilian beef.
China's Ministry of Commerce announced that imports of Brazilian beef reached 100% of the 2026 annual quota on September 29. Consequently, starting at midnight on October 1, an additional tariff of 55% will be applied to Brazilian beef imported in excess of the quota, in addition to existing tariffs.
The quota allocated to Brazil this year is approximately 1.106 million tons, and a 12% tariff has been applied to imports within this quota. The tariff burden on volumes exceeding the quota rises to a total of 67% when including existing tariffs. This measure follows the beef import safeguard measures introduced by China to protect its domestic cattle industry.
As Brazil is China's largest supplier of beef, attention is focused on whether export volumes will shift to other markets during the remaining period. In particular, if the diversification of Brazilian beef export destinations accelerates, it could impact Asian import markets, including Korea, so it is necessary to monitor future volume and price trends.
