Majang Livestock Market to Pursue Modernization by Separating Distribution, Food, and Living Spaces
Scheduled to commission planning services in 2027… Targeting public notification of district unit plan amendment in 2029

A modernization project is being pursued to reorganize the Seoul Majang Livestock Market, dividing it into areas for livestock distribution, food, and residential living spaces. The plan is to improve both the distribution environment and the surrounding living environment by reorganizing the market, where various functions are currently mixed, to suit their intended purposes.
According to reports by the Herald Business on November 1 and 3, the Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to commission a service for the establishment of a district unit plan in January 2027. The total service fee is 900 million won, which will be shared equally between the Seoul Metropolitan Government and Seongdong-gu, and the service is scheduled to run until the end of 2028. It was reported that the related budget has been included in the 2027 budget proposal.
Meat distribution is aggregated, and food and living spaces are separated.
The key is to redefine ‘which functions to place where.’ This approach, which reorganizes building uses and spatial utilization standards through a district unit plan, was presented under the name ‘Majang Rezoning Plan.’
The plan is broadly divided into three branches. The Livestock Distribution Innovation Zone will consolidate wholesale distribution functions to improve working conditions and byproduct disposal. The Regional Vitality Promotion Zone is planned to be a space for purchasing and consuming meat to enjoy gourmet culture, while the Complex Cultural Exchange Zone will be developed to expand amenities for residents, such as libraries, kids' cafes, and parking lots.

2029 is the target for a plan change, not the completion of construction.
It is also necessary to distinguish the timeline. The year 2029 proposed by the Seoul Metropolitan Government is the target date for the public announcement of the district unit plan amendment. It does not mean the point in time when market renovation work or store relocation is fully completed.

It has not been finalized that existing stores will be relocated all at once. According to reports, Seongdong-gu explained the possibility of gradual relocation, such as managing new business types according to the intended use of each zone after the plan is finalized. The specific implementation methods and facility layout are expected to be concretized in the plans to be established in the future.
