The U.S. government will invest up to $500 million to support small and independent beef slaughterhouses.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that it will provide one-time subsidies to the relevant slaughterhouses through the ‘Process Enhancement Program for U.S. Ranchers (SPUR).’
The background of this support lies in the decline in the number of cattle raised in the United States and the resulting high cost of procuring live cattle.
The USDA plans to reduce the burden of processing costs per head by providing subsidies calculated based on factors such as the processing performance of slaughterhouses. Eligible recipients include U.S.-owned small and independent beef slaughterhouses subject to federal inspections.

On the other hand, the four largest companies with the highest market share in the U.S. beef slaughtering market, as well as facilities owned by state governments and universities, are excluded from the support. The USDA plans to use this support to maintain independent slaughtering capacity and strengthen competition in the beef processing market and regional supply chains. This is noteworthy given that the U.S. cattle shortage is spreading beyond mere increases in live cattle and beef prices to become a significant financial burden for small and medium-sized slaughterhouses.
